Animal Cruelty Investigator

Houston SPCA | Harris County & Surrounding Areas

If you are analytical, methodical, and driven by accuracy and ethics—not emotion or recognition—this role was built for you.

Houston SPCA is seeking an Animal Cruelty Investigator who approaches complex, high‑stakes situations with calm, discipline, and professional rigor. This position demands someone who thrives on facts, evidence, procedure, and correctness, and who is comfortable operating independently in emotionally charged environments while maintaining objectivity.

Who You Are

You are someone who:

  • Prefers clear standards, protocols, and lawful procedures
  • Makes decisions based on evidence, logic, and animal welfare best practices
  • Remains focused, steady, and composed in difficult or confrontational situations
  • Values accuracy over speed and quality over convenience
  • Is comfortable working independently, with limited supervision
  • Holds yourself to high ethical and professional standards
  • Is motivated by doing the work correctly, not by public recognition

You are not:

  • Easily swayed by emotion or public pressure
  • Comfort-driven or routine-averse
  • Someone who needs constant validation or fast-paced social interaction

What You Will Do

As an Animal Cruelty Investigator, you will:

  • Conduct neutral, fact-based investigations into cruelty, abuse, and neglect cases
  • Perform on-site inspections, interviews, and evidence gathering
  • Evaluate animal conditions using professional judgment and established criteria
  • Handle and transport animals safely, humanely, and methodically
  • Prioritize cases based on severity, protocol, and available evidence
  • Document every case with thorough, precise, and defensible records
  • Collaborate professionally with law enforcement, veterinarians, and prosecutors
  • Prepare formal investigative reports and testify in court when required
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and procedural integrity

This role requires decision-making without certainty, adherence to law and policy, and the ability to stand behind your conclusions.

What Success Looks Like

  • Investigations are well-documented, accurate, and defensible
  • Animals' best interests are protected through sound, unbiased decisions
  • Evidence stands up under legal and professional scrutiny
  • Cases move forward clearly because of your documentation and judgment
  • You are known internally for reliability, precision, and professionalism

Required Experience & Capabilities

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant investigative or enforcement experience
  • Strong background in animal handling across multiple species
  • Experience in law enforcement, humane enforcement, animal control, military, or investigative roles preferred
  • Comfortable using case-management software and digital investigative tools
  • Able to follow written procedures and legal requirements precisely
  • Willing and able to:
    • Become certified as a Private Investigator (Texas DPS)
    • Work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays
    • Operate vehicles and trailers
    • Work in challenging and emotionally difficult environments

Why This Role Matters

This position protects animals through discipline, structure, and lawful action. It requires trust—trust that when you act, your decisions are sound, justified, and defensible. If you are motivated by mastery, integrity, and technical excellence, this role offers meaningful, long-term impact.
