Houston SPCA is seeking an Animal Cruelty Investigator who approaches complex, high‑stakes situations with calm, discipline, and professional rigor. What You Will Do
As an Animal Cruelty Investigator, you will:
- Conduct neutral, fact-based investigations into cruelty, abuse, and neglect cases
- Perform on-site inspections, interviews, and evidence gathering
- Evaluate animal conditions using professional judgment and established criteria
- Handle and transport animals safely, humanely, and methodically
- Prioritize cases based on severity, protocol, and available evidence
- Document every case with thorough, precise, and defensible records
- Collaborate professionally with law enforcement, veterinarians, and prosecutors
- Prepare formal investigative reports and testify in court when required
- Maintain strict confidentiality and procedural integrity

Required Experience & Capabilities
- Minimum 2 years of relevant investigative or enforcement experience
- Strong background in animal handling across multiple species
- Experience in law enforcement, humane enforcement, animal control, military, or investigative roles preferred
- Comfortable using case-management software and digital investigative tools
- Able to follow written procedures and legal requirements precisely
- Willing and able to:
- Become certified as a Private Investigator (Texas DPS)
- Work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays
- Operate vehicles and trailers
- Work in challenging and emotionally difficult environments
