Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) is currently looking for two (2) experienced, self-motivated, and organized Animal Care Supervisors to fill two (2) full-time vacancies at its shelter in Troutdale, Oregon.

As part of the MCAS Leadership Team, you will collaborate with the other supervisors, under direction of the Operations Manager, in implementing the direction and goals of the work unit while supporting the division's mission in the areas of providing humane care, and exploring all possible pathways for the pets in care. 

The first supervisor vacancy will oversee the “Back of House”. This is the behind-the-scenes work that provides day-to-day supervision of the animal care, Husbandry (feeding/cleaning), customer support in helping show adoptable animals and reunite lost pets with owners and Enrichment programs. These programs provide direct care in the way of daily feeding and cleaning for all pets in the shelter, coordination and oversight of enrichment activities such as group room enrichment activities, individual animal-specific activities, and dog playgroups. It also coordinates with the Pathway and Enrichment Specialist to ensure a daily review of behavior records to determine pathways for animals. In this role, you will directly oversee, lead and supervise the work of Animal Technician 1’s, Animal Technician 2’s and Program Specialists. 

The second supervisor vacancy will oversee the “Front of House”. This is the public-facing work that provides day-to-day supervision of the Adoptions, and Admissions programs. These programs ensure animals are matched appropriately using a progressive open adoption model; conducts daily review of incoming animals and their records to ensure accuracy and completeness and cultivates relationships with community partners and additional animal welfare organizations to assist in finding pathways for animals. It will also act as the expert point of contact for the general public. In this role, you will directly oversee, lead, and supervise the work of Animal Technician 2’s and Program Specialists.

They are also a creative leader that utilizes a collaborative approach when approached with challenges, and models these behaviors for their team, jumping in when work needs to be done and finding solutions to create and maintain a high level of animal care and customer service.

As the Program Supervisor, duties may include:

  • Provide immediate day-to-day supervision of the adoption program and plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of a diverse workforce.

  • Oversee the daily care of all animals in the shelter by ensuring animals are receiving the highest level of husbandry through maintaining clean animal housing, ensuring access to food, water, and daily enrichment.

  • Create and establish Adoption Events with local community partners. 

  • Conduct daily review of incoming animal records to ensure accuracy and completeness. 

  • Analyze and report on program effectiveness and efficiency, identify gaps and recommend improvements, develop standard operating procedures, protocols, and guidelines, implement operational change

  • Monitor length of stay for animals in shelter to ensure a manageable population based on staffing levels and resources.

  • Train Animal Care staff on processes and procedures; identify and develop ongoing opportunities for learning 

  • Hire staff, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correctly identify and achieve professional goal. 

  • Plan, budget, and manage the resources for all assigned programs. Develop, plan, and implement program financial goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

Education/Training:

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree (in lieu of a degree, we will accept equivalent practical experience); AND

  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible administrative and/or operations experience, including two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications/ Transferable Skills*: You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/ transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates.   • Knowledge of animal sheltering best practices and common programming.

  • Demonstrated experience in change management, including working with staff to implement changes while maintaining positive morale.

  • Experience in establishing short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals that promote growth and accountability. 

  • Demonstrated an ability to select, develop, and evaluate staff while cultivating a positive and connected work atmosphere.

  • Experience with identifying and creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to strengthen processes pertaining to daily operations, and identifying weaknesses in existing SOPs and adjust accordingly to maintain departmental productivity.
