The Director of Animal Care is responsible for the daily operations of all SPCA of Hancock County internal operations, policies, procedures and the majority of the organization’s staff.  The Director of Animal Care provides leadership, oversight and long-range planning to ensure that all areas are operating at the highest standard possible to ensure proper cl;eaning and disease control. This includes modeling SPCA-HC operations after the best practices of AVMA, AAHA, ASA, NACA, and other relevant organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure species appropriate housing, diet and enrichments for all pets in the shelter and in foster care.
  • Develop work schedules, assigns and reviews work, hires and trains new staff, provides assistance and direction as needed, evaluates Animal Care staff performance.
  • Work collaboratively with all staff members to achieve the completion of daily work assignments, following proper protocols; has accountability for measurable results in these areas.
  • Regularly conduct and participate in meetings with the staff to share ideas and suggestions designed to improve working conditions and the overall care of the animals in the SPCA’s care.
  • Ensure a high level of communication and supervision with and maintains discipline and prescribes work performance standards for all team members and volunteers.
  • Promote a positive business relationship with local veterinarians.
  • Establish and maintains an approved standard of care for the animals in the SPCA-HC’s care. 
  • Oversee intakes and adoptions and ensures that the public receives accurate information.
  • Uphold the values of the SPCA-HC
  • Verify compliance with all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Lead staff discussions regarding behavior and health treatment plans as well as other animal-related concerns. 
  • Assess pet medical needs and work within resources to meet those needs
  • Research and remain up to date on animal sanitation and housing best practices
  • Communicate with potential adopters and other members of the community in a friendly and knowledgeable manner
  • Other related duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experiences
  • Minimum of three years supervising staff, preferably in an animal care environment
  • Strong veterinary technician background or equivalent skills
  • Strong safe, low stress animal handling skills
  • Able to scoop, bend, twist, lift and squat as a part of normal job functions
  • Able to interact with domestic animals and their associated dietary and housing items without issue.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

This position is a member of the SPCA-HC leadership team and the schedule is determined as the organization’s needs dictate.
