The Animal Control Officer, under direct supervision of the Animal Control Supervisor, enforces City
ordinances that pertain to animals, investigates cruelty and neglect of animals, educates the public and assists in the operation of the animal shelter.
- Must be 18 years of age at time of employment.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be a United States citizen or authorized alien worker.
- Valid Driver’s License and credible driving record.
- Credible employment record.
- No felony convictions or commission of or participation in any felony crime.
- No on-going or repetitious history of committing or participating in misdemeanor crimes.
- Six months to one year of experience in a related field preferred, but not required.
- Have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities of a Shelter Attendant.
- Skills in public relations.
- Extensive knowledge in the handling and care of animals, knowledge of animal behavior, species and breed identification, disease recognition, and recordkeeping
- May partake in euthanization of animals; ability to control aggressive and heavy animals and
manage stress.
- Ability to operate various equipment including bird dispersal, control and restraint and radio/audio
equipment.
- Ability to handle irate customers,
- Ability to present ideas clearly and concisely with verbal and written communication skills.
- Counsel, support and be empathetic with people to establish rapport, explain complaints to offenders,
victims, witnesses, interact and work with citizens; mediate, use tact and diplomacy in dealing with
the public, maintain control of emotions, keep personal feelings to self, use reasoning to solve
problems.
- Knowledge of radio procedures and communication protocol.
- Ability to handle multi-tasks and prioritize.
- Proactive communication/interactions.
